Literature Survey Plan

Currently, I am collecting papers related to self-reflection. I need to keep doing this until I have a good body of papers to review. I will collect 50 or so papers. To help manage the amount of papers I have to read, I will collect and read the papers in increments of five. Collect 5 related papers, then summarize.

I need to do this method for the several literature survey tasks. These tasks are:

  • What have research in different domains said about providing feedback about one’s behavior?
  • What issues have systems encountered when users collect or reflect on data? This question will be explored specific to personal informatics systems.

Another thing I need to do is read the papers that Bob and Laura pointed to me. Just pick 3 for now. The question you should try to answer is how are they showing that information can lead to behavior change.

In the past few days, I have been working on a storyboard of my proposal presentation. Instead of going directly into PowerPoint to create my slides, I draw sketches of slides on paper. I do this because I want to get a good idea of the story I want to tell first before I commit to creating the slides. The presentation is long (50 minutes) and I expect to have between 50 to 100 slides. With this many slides, keeping the story in my head will be difficult. Working on paper first allows me to work at high level, keeping the story as a priority.

At this point, I’m at the stage when I’m about to describe the work that I will propose. One final push before I start creating the slides.

  • People strive to gain self-knowledge.
    • “Gnothi seauton” or “Know thyself” was inscribed on the temple of Apollo in Delphi.]
    • [Picture depicting philosophy.
  • One way to gain self-knowledge is to observe oneself. Another way is to use tools to track one’s behavior.
    • [Picture of person watching herself in the mirror]
  • Personal informatics systems is a class of systems that help people track their behaviors.
    • [Picture of systems]
  • Notice that most of these systems only track one type of information.
    • [Arrows from systems pointing to the types collected]
  • This is a problem because there are many aspects of people’s lives that affect each other.
    • [Image of several arrows parallel to each other. Show linkage.
