For whom you lose yourself
and by whom you hope to be found
consider first the cartographer
before you choose again the new frontier

spread your map and weigh its corners
run your fingers along its borders
trace each stream through every canyon
count the lines that mark that mountain
note the lakes and empty basins
and ask yourself, who’s made them?

you remember fondly those balmy nights
true that every touch was journey
truer still that every breath was learning
but remember too how sultry you lay
and how cruelly the stars could play

Consider first the cartographer
who drew your dreams

One red chrysalis cannot hurt the dancer
adorned in tutu
or could that sullen rhinoceros
bare its horn against her
There are these and other possibilities
none quite right as I’d like them
but amongst them is my dream
the right dream that comes just before the sun
and fades away until I turn the showerknob
returning like a lover to say
still, we can do better
cold water warms slowly

go lower

a bough is light
and dips only to offer a peach
and again to receive applause

applaud the triumph of its being
applaud when the bough goes lower
because it rhymes with tau
and we can spell it phonetically
tee, ay, tau: bower:

an array of weightless branches
etymologically rooted
in the French word for cloud
and the old Old English
for forest: bower as to
bough as tower toes
the sky

Joris-Karl Huysmans: “I wish to confound all these people, to create a work of art of a supernatural realism and of a spiritualist naturalism. I wish to prove… that nothing is explained in the mysteries which surround us.”

In response to the claim that Joyce had no reader, that he wrote only for himself:

“Joyce was a genius to be sure, but even God could not write without a reader.”
